Happy hunting, ------------------ Gordon.baldy I have been looking for a book or travel guide that would discuss/rate/suggest a
good castle tour. My husband is interested in Germany but I would also like to know where the best castles to see are and if there is a book that rates castles. Any books I have found are for a specific area like England. I want to know what a good tour would be and would like a book that discusses options without having to buy a book for each graphic area (at least until we have narrowed it down.)
ThanksPeter You could try Lucy, Queen of Castles at, www.castles.org\castles, they do tours of Europe. And have many pictures of the last tour. Which covered Germany, France etc.
PeteErik Schmidt What you are looking for will very much depend on how widely and for how long you intend to travel. Also, what is your definition of the "best castles". Are you interested in military structures, from what period etc.
Many people are interested in touring the great palaces and manors(mostly 15th to 18th century) with their sumptuous rooms, expansive gardens and pseudo defensive folly. Other people, such as myself, cringe at the thought. The "best castles" is all a matter of taste and interest.
If you are interested in touring Germany, you should be able to get some fairly good books covering some of the main castles. Once you narrow down the area, post a request for suggestions here, stating the type of castles which take your interest and those which you intend to see. I'm sure someone can come up with suggestions.
There are plenty of German castles at; http://www.burgenwelt.de/
and http://www.burgenstrasse.de/all_cities.htm
Erikwurdsmiff Johansens guides provide rated castle sites throughout Europe, though with a view to facilitating accomodation. They also provide some good historic data in their printed guides, which are available from good newsagents over here at a small cost. It may not be exactly what you are looking for, but it may prove useful. Other than that, the web is probably your best option, studying each country. Try the castle Collections, and Castle Tours links below. Many folks have submitted details of their own tours, and their are numerous castle gazetter type sites for different countries.
Go to
http://www.historichouses.co.uk
for Johansens details.
For Germany I'd recommend
http://www.roadstoruins.com/
in addition to the sites given by Erik
